The only purpose of foundation is to even out the skin tone.  Do not use too much because it is not meant to cover imperfections.
 
Avoid applying foundation to your eye area.  You do not want to bring a lot of texture underneath the eyes, especially if you have darkness or wrinkles.  The texture from makeup that you put there will only emphasize any lines you already have there. 
 
Apply foundation from the outer portion of your face in towards your nose.  If you start in the center of you face you usually put too much around the mouth and the nose.
